Marine Robotics Laboratory is pleased to announce that a key milestone has been reached in the Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) project, developed in collaboration with Istanbul Technical University and the Turkish Petroleum Offshore Technology Center (TP-OTC).

Test Process and Findings

Tests were conducted on the model-scale version of the TP-OTC platform supply vessel PSV Sancar. During the trial, the vehicle was artificially disturbed in both position and heading. The DPS detected these deviations and returned the vehicle to its original position and initial yaw angle with high accuracy.

The performance demonstrated at model scale shows that a prototype of sufficient maturity for integration into full-scale vessels has been achieved. The system successfully meets the core technical requirements for the transition to full-scale ships.

Strategic Significance

The application of Dynamic Positioning is most common on drilling platforms and auxiliary vessels, and it also constitutes a fundamental technology layer in the development of autonomous marine vehicles. The validation of an indigenous DPS solution represents a decisive step toward reducing supply dependencies, achieving operational flexibility, and building strategic technology capability.

This work is regarded as a concrete product of the long-standing university–industry collaboration between ITU and TP-OTC.
